Oligomers in UV-Curable Coatings: Core Role and Industry Trends

Oligomers, also known as prepolymers or oligomers, are the backbone of UV-curable resin coatings. They hold a central position in the entire coating system and play a crucial role in determining the coating’s key properties such as adhesion, hardness, flexibility, abrasion resistance, heat resistance, chemical resistance, durability, optical functions, and aging resistance.

Environmentally Friendly

In the research and application of UV-curable resin coatings, we observe a wide variety of oligomers, with unsaturated polyesters being among the most common. The curing speed of UV coatings must be adjusted based on factors such as the substrate, coating, and curing distance. If the curing speed is too fast, it can result in a sticky surface or incomplete curing beneath the surface; conversely, if the speed is too slow, the surface may age prematurely.

Additionally, the temperature of the working environment significantly impacts the viscosity of UV coatings. If there are large fluctuations in viscosity, it is advisable to adjust the room temperature, typically maintaining it between 15-25°C. Furthermore, it is crucial to avoid direct sunlight during the curing process.

Traditional coatings used in the furniture industry, such as PU, PE, and NC coatings, are typically applied by spraying. However, this method has drawbacks, including low application efficiency, high costs, and environmental pollution, which can also pose health risks to workers. In contrast, UV-curable resins are hailed as the “green industrial technology of the 21st century,” offering numerous advantages such as being environmentally friendly, cost-effective, suitable for mechanized operations, and highly efficient. More businesses are recognizing the benefits of UV-curable resins and are increasing their investment in this technology. In the future, the widespread adoption of UV-curable resins will be an inevitable trend in the industry.

This version emphasizes the key terms related to UV-curable resins and their application, making it suitable for readers interested in the technical aspects of the industry.
